Great Western Tire actually started in 1949 known as Schulte Home and Auto. The main store was located on Center Street in the current Buffalo Bill Bar and Grill in Oakley Kansas. This Building housed the showroom and merchandise, with the shop being located directly behind in the back half of the old NAPA building.
From the beginning the store sold tires and services for vehicle, truck, and farm equipment but it didn't stop there. The original store sold everything from appliances, televisions, household items, coats, radios, milking equipment and of course tires.
The late 1960's and 1970's proved to be an exciting time as the store experienced many big and exciting changes. In order to highlight the growing business in 1969, Bill and Emilee Schulte decided to change the name to Great Western Tire. In conjunction with the name change this also started the long affiliation with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. This proved to be a very wise decision as this relationship has continued to thrive for over 40 years. In 1974, the business had outgrown its location and the decision was made to invest in a new facility. On January 23, 1975, they celebrated the Grand Opening of the brand new building at 319 E. Front St. The new building included many of the same products and quality of service that the customers has come to expect. The addition of the Vickers Company affiliation as well as adding gasoline helped the company expand its services to the customer.
In 1988, Bill and Emilee sold their son, Rick Schulte, and employee Curtis Thompson. Curtis went to work for them is 1972 as a service truce driver and general shop help. Eventually, Curtis worked his way up to manager. After many years of successful partnership, Curtis made the decision to buy the rest of the company and became sole owner.
In order to meet the growing change and to keep a top notch facility Great Western Tire has just completed another expansion. This addition allows for four semi-trucks with their trailers to be pulled in out of the weather at once. It also includes a storage warehouse connected to the main shop. With the completion of the building Great Western Tire has started doing alignments and front end work on semi-trucks.
Today, Great Western Tire still offers Goodyear, Dunlop, Kelly and Titan tires for any of your tire needs. The main thing that has not changed over the years is Great Western Tire is still committed to offfering a quality product at a reasonable price and quality service after the sale.
